In late 2023 Algae Control Australia heard of the issues this nursery was having regarding irrigation and continual blockages.
We approached them to recommend our ALL NEW technology, the Pulsar technology, which stands alone in its performance using ultrasound and has been tested and proven to not only work on controlling or elimination thousands of algae species, but also it's ability to eliminate bio-film, which in short, is the foundation for algae to grow on.
Naturally in the nurseries water recycling system there is a lot of nutrient in the water that drains back from the seedlings, which is Boomaroo Nurseries major focus and market and done an impressively large scale and automated hothouses.
Due to the success of these systems in USA and other countries, even though so new to the market, we felt we could help the situation.
THE PROBLEM
As we wanted to be certain to significantly improve or solve the issue the nursery was facing, we asked exactly what they wanted to achieve with our system, if all test and water results proved our system could at least help the situation.
We were told that they were facing a dire issues, since upgrading their watering system which included a new filter system. I note this new filter system was clearly doing a great job in the area of filtration, however the filters were getting blocked so fast that there was a lot of down time with the need to continuously clean them. We were told the water throughput was down to about 50 000 litres per day and they needed significantly more daily throughput for their plants to be suitably watered, but the filter blockages were making this impossible.
So this set our goal and this was to tackle the fibrous algae issues in the supply dams.
OUR APPROACH TO THEIR ALGAE PROBLEM
Firstly Algae Control Australia sent a quotation, for the 2 dams which were felt would be best to treat to determine of the cost was within the nurseries budget, yet it was a problem that could potentially debilitate this business, as plants obviously have to have the needed water to survive, and seedlings especially cannot dry out for even short periods. This was all done based on analyses to be done later, to make certain we were confidant we could control the dominant species in these particular dams.
After approval that the price was within budget, Algae Control Australia arranged a free water test kit, and a short while later full results were received back from the laboratory, which were examined by the team of scientist at WaterIQ Tech in USA. The conclusion was, that most of the algae was without the Pulsar systems range to control or eliminate and we were ready to take on the job.
PLANNING PULSAR PLACEMENT
All jobs are first mapped to determine the best placement for the actual floating Pulsar units, with consideration taken to the following:
- Treatment Effective Range
- Suitable power supply position ( floating solar supplies also available)
- Cable lengths required
- best anchoring points
- trenching requirements
- control box mount position
OUR SOLUTION
Due to the size of the dams and the proximity to each other, with a power supply already there between the two dams, we determined we could run 2 of the smaller Pulsar 3400 units from one control box.
It is to be noted, both the Pulsar 3400 units and the 4400 units emit the same over 4400 frequencies, it is only the effective range that varies.
Being our first install in Australia, Algae Control Australia did the installation as quoted, which was all done in under a day.
THE RESULT
Further laboratory tests were done after about 4 month of install proving the elimination of the most dominant and abundant algae species and indeed the most filamentous type which are typically those that black filters. While there was no cyanobacteria/ blue green algae present, there was plenty green algae, however these systems are super effective in the treatment of most cyanobacteria species, so there ongoing use here with be a safeguard against if this problem algae if it attempts to grow here.
Ultrasonic success at Boomaroo Nurseries, Lara, Victoria
Our aim at the nursery was to increase the amount of water we recycled which had reduced to around 50,000L per day due to filters blocking continuously from algae sourced from our supply dams. Since installation of the WaterIQ Pulsar system in 2 dams, our algae count has dropped dramatically giving us the ability to recycle 200,000 litres of water per day with only infrequent filter cleaning required. We will see as water demand increases, however it appears we will be able to increase our recycling capacity as time goes on thanks to the reduced algae in the water! At Boomaroo Nurseries, we highly recommend this ultrasonic system to get control of your algae related water issues. It is also great seeing this difference without the need of using expensive and harmful chemicals.
